Reception & Legacy: Premiering at the 2001 Berlin International Film Festival, Bad Guy attracted significant controversy for its graphic depiction of sexual exploitation and violence. While some critics condemned it as misogynistic and exploitative, others viewed it as a provocative exploration of moral ambiguity and the darker side of human desire. Over time, it has remained one of Kim Ki-duk’s most infamous works, emblematic of his transgressive and uncompromising style.
Modern Critique: Today, Bad Guy is seen as a deeply polarizing film—hailed by some as a bold, art-house confrontation with uncomfortable truths, and rejected by others as deeply problematic in its treatment of women. Its stark imagery, minimal dialogue, and haunting performances keep it relevant in discussions of Korean cinema’s more controversial exports.
