Synopsis
Set in May 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film follows a small New Mexico town divided between Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix), who resists mask mandates and pushes for “freedom,” and Mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), who insists on strict public health measures.
What starts as a policy dispute spirals into a years-long culture war, fueled by conspiracy theories, social media, and growing mistrust. As the conflict escalates, the community becomes a microcosm of America’s political and social divide, blending neo-Western grit with sharp satirical humor.
